Are you stitching along with The Splendid Sampler? I am, and I am having tons of fun and learning a lot!
One of The Splendid Sampler designers, Lindsay Mayland, created a bonus pattern using her Pieces of Friendship block
I made the Pieces of Friendship Mini Quilt as a pillow sham for my mother-in-law for Mother's Day because I take hints well. Very well, in fact.
At Thanksgiving, when she was visiting, she saw some David Walker Sweetheart fabric left from my Share + Share Alike pattern sample and kept saying "I like this fabric. I really, really like this fabric." So, I took the hint and used that fabric to make her Mother's Day gift:
Do you like it? Do you want to see a video about how I quilted it?
Good, because I filmed while Hazel, my sweet Sweet Sixteen, and I worked together to quilt this pillow. This isn't meant to be an instructional video; it's purpose is to answer the "How did she do that?" questions. I had a special guest star in the video and I hope you enjoy meeting him. (If you watch on a mobile device, you won't see the explanation on the video. Blame YouTube for not supporting annotations on mobile devices. Sorry!)
I used another of my FabuLux thread colors: Hush. It is a pastel lavender/pink/peach thread. There is no purple in this quilt, but the lavender plays beautifully with the brown fabrics and looks great on the pillow!

Final note, the fabrics used were left over from this quilt:
Share + Share Alike, a pattern I designed using 16 fat eighths plus borders, binding, and backing.

Thank you for posting this video. It really helps to see how something is done!
Love watching you do your craft, girl ...
Beautiful.
You're not only a born artist but a natural teacher, too ...
That is just beautiful, Debby. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for the video. You did a great job explaining what you were doing. I hope you'll post lots more! Your pillow is beautiful :)
I wish you would show how to make the "knot" and what you do when done with a section (how you move to another spot on quilt) - do you cut threads on top and bottom when moving to a new section?
Wow you make that look easy. LOL I am sure it is from hours and hours of practice. Just beautiful.
UNBELIEVABLE quilting on the full size quilt! you could have just quilted on white fabric and it would be amazing!! I hope someday to just become a fraction of how good you are! Thanks for your tutorial! :D
Thank you so much for sharing. You have inspired me to keep on trying!
Love the quilting. Thank you for showing how you handle a thread break! Beautiful work!
Ok, so I read through the comments and nobody else asked. I'm relatively new to quilting, so please bear with me. What are those white meshy squares you have your hands on and where do I get them?
Great video....good insight on visualizing and hand tracing first. I have been working on a long arm at a rental studio, intrigued by your use of a sit down machine. Thanks again, you inspired me to think about my night quilt differently.
Enjoyed watching this to see how free motion quilting is done. The Splendid Sampler is my first quilt and I am a little nervous about putting all the blocks together in the end and doing the quilting part. I am doing a few other projects as well. I am concerned I will end up with a lot of quilt tops that don't turn into quilts. I guess the best thing is to practise free motion quilting regularly as I think a big part of it is confidence in what you are doing.
This is awesome! My mother has given me her quilting machine and i am excited to get it to my home, set up and learn how to use it! Thanks for a great lesson!

Happy Quilting!
Nonna: those white mesh squares are shelf liner. You can also use gloves, a hoop, or many other fabric gripping tools.
Happy quilting!
Hi Debby,
Thank you for showing tutorials for the splendid sampler. What size would I cut the backing for the individual blocks? 7.5 inches? I could probably pick any fabric for backing, mix it up or keep it all same. How do we assemble the quilt with individual quilted blocks? We wouldn't be able to use a sashing, correct? Thank you!
Lisa,
I am not doing a quilt as you go and will not be providing instruction for that technique. I can't wait until all 100 blocks are done and the sashing plan is revealed!
