Globetrotting: Block 1 Washington DC (video 6)

I am done with the quilting on Pat Sloan's Washington DC block!!!

The original plan looked like this:

The quilt didn't get any funny ideas today and it let me quilt the orange triangles as I originally planned:



I repeated this quilting in all 16 orange triangles in the block.

Are you ready for the big reveal?

Is it OK to say that I love this?

I left the brown border unquilted.  I will quilt it after adding the other sections of the quilt.

I can't wait to get started on quilting the next block!

Quilting Chit Chat

I have a quilting friend named Teri.  She is smart and pretty.  We have fun together.

She writes a really cool blog and interviews quilters.  Today she posted an interview with me.  You should go and read it.

My Hit List

I have made progress on my Hit List:

Celtic Solstice by Bonnie Hunter -- DONE!

1.  My mini Dresden Plate quilt from Pinwheels:

I still need to layer and quilt this. 

2.  I have a leaders-and-enders project in the works:

and eventually into this:

Slowly.

3.  I like to keep hand sewing ready for my travels.  I pulled out an old applique project:

This is packed and ready to go.

4.  I already showed you another hand sewing project that is in the works:

5.  I started a new project this year, Pat Sloan's Globetrotting block of the month.  

I finished the first two blocks:

6.  I liked the Globetrotting quilt so much that I started it in a second colorway:

7.  I pulled out an old block of the month quilt.  Did I mention that it was OLD?

It's time to finish this quilt and let someone love it.

Globetrotting: Block 1 Washington DC (video 5)

I am so excited to  be this close to finishing my Washington DC quilt block from Pat Sloan's Globetrotting block of the month.

I planned to quilt a series of triangles inside of the dark green triangles:

I used some tools for this quilting:  a Handi Quilter Right Angle Ruler, probably my favorite ruler of all time, as well as some Handi Grip to help the ruler stay in place on the fabric.  I quilt with the ruler next to the foot of Hazel, my sweet Sweet Sixteen.  She is a sit-down longarm quilting machine.  If I were quilting on a home sewing machine, I would use the ruler to mark lines and then quilt over them; I do not quilt with the foot against the ruler using a home sewing machine -- ever!

Once I got quilting, my plans for how to quilt this section changed.  See for yourself:



Sometimes I just have to listen to what the quilt wants.

Samuel Sunday

My Samuel is one week old today.  To celebrate, I want to show you another one of his quilts:

My students have seen this quilt -- it traveled with me for a few years.  Now, it belongs to my Samuel.

Hotel tour -- Night 12

If you cannot guess the hotel chain from the photo, I'll give you another hint : cinnamon rolls.

Outlets next to the bed-- a definite plus.

A hotel full of cheerleaders in town for a competition -- relatively quiet so far, but I'm not too confident that it will stay that way.

UFO #1

I finished my first UFO of the year:

I usually take quilt photos on the deck.  The deck is covered by 18 inches of hard-packed snow, so I had to adapt.

The quilt is Bonnie Hunter's Celtic Solstice mystery quilt.  I have started several of her mystery quilts, but this is only the second one I have finished.  I really love this!  Thanks, Bonnie!

My husband likes it but doesn't want to keep it.  My daughter likes it but doesn't want to keep it.  I don't know who will own this quilt, but I'm sure someone will come forward to claim it eventually.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

For those who have seen my trunk show of "Molly" and "Charlie" quilts (the names of the grandchildren I didn't yet have), I am thrilled to make this special announcement:

I changed my name to Grandma on Sunday, February 2!!!!!

Globetrotting: Block 1 Washington DC (video 4)

I'm so excited to be nearly finished quilting block one of Pat Sloan's Globetrotting block of the month.

My plan for today's quilting was to quilt the light green squares:

I used some tools for this:  the Handi Quilter Oval B set and Handi Grip.  I use these because I am quilting on Hazel, my sweet Sweet Sixteen.  This is a sit-down longarm machine and is made to use this type of template.  If I were quilting on a home machine, I would use the templates to draw the lines and follow them, free-motion, while quilting.  I do not use these templates on my home machine; it is not safe to do so.

I repeated that quilting three more times and here is the current condition of my Washington DC block:

One of my retreat ladies lent me the most awesome tool ever:

I need to RUN to my local quilt shop and order one of these lovely tools NOW!  I was able to trim all of my half-square triangles for Pat Sloan's Globetrotting block so quickly and easily!

Gifted Quilt-type Stuff -- for James and Danielle

My son's wife's brother recently got married.  I noticed that the bride had a lot of black and white kitchen items on her registry so I took a guess and made her this table runner and a set of cloth napkins:

It looked so good on my kitchen table that I want to make one for myself!

Globetrotting: Block 1 Washington DC (video 3)

It's time to add some quilting to Pat Sloan's Globetrotting block.

Today's design:  the ribbon candy in the tan Vs:

I did all of the quilting freehand on Hazel, my sweet Sweet Sixteen:



I repeated the design three more times and finished quilting all of the tan fabric:

I really like the way this is turning out.

I think I wrote every word I planned to say, memorized it, and then repeated it on camera.  I was very uncomfortable and I think I sounded that way, too.  And the ring wasn't distracting AT ALL!
